what's next after installed linux rc kernel

I have followed the kernelnewbies guide to install the staging rc kernel to my box.
I can successfully boot up but I found the pc has no sound and the USB HDD cannot be accessed. I wonder what to do next to trace these issues. I hope this forum or somewhere can give me some hints to startup with.
