weird wine error message followed by a window containing only black.

I'm using wine to run a windows game (and others work fine) but for this particular exe if I run from the terminal, all I'm getting is this error, over and over:
0032:err:d3d:wined3d_cs_exec_update_sub_resource Failed to load buffer location.
And a window with the correct title, but which is completely black, which will flicker occasionally.
I'm running a fairly new, clean install of Xubuntu Focal.
I've tried googling that error, and parts of it too, but I never get anything useful, mostly links to pastebin.com where someone with the same issue has posted a whole log file, but no context about why. And a youtube video on running DeltaRune under wine with other Xubuntu users mentioning exactly the same error.
Any thoughts on what's going on here?
