What you need to know
  • Reliance Jio is working on a 5G solution using 100% homegrown technologies.
  • Jio plans to offer its 5G solution to carriers in other countries as a completely managed service.
  • The company also announced its first mixed-reality glasses called "Jio Glass."

Reliance Industries, which is India's largest private company, today announced that it is working on a homegrown 5G solution that will enable it to provide a "world-class 5G service" in the country. During the company's annual general meeting, the company also revealed plans of launching mixed-reality glasses called "Jio Glass."

The 5G solution, which is claimed to use 100% homegrown technologies and solutions, will apparently be ready for deployment next year. Reliance Jio plans to begin testing its 5G service in India as soon as 5G spectrum is made available. Since Jio uses an all-IP converged network, upgrading its existing 4G network to 5G will not be very difficult. After deploying its 5G service in India, Jio plans to start offering the homegrown solution to mobile networks around the world as a completely managed service.

The new Jio Glass, which is the company's first mixed-reality glass, enables 3D virtual classrooms and holographic classes through Jio's Mixed Reality cloud. It comes with a high-resolution display and also has a "personalized audio system" for an immersive experience. Jio Glass is currently said to support more than 25 apps, although that number will likely grow further by the time it becomes available. While there is no word on the price or availability, Jio Glass is expected to be priced lower than smart glasses like Snap Spectacles 3.
