Steam does not display any GUI after logging in on slack 14.2

Hello,
I run slackware 14.2 with multilib installation and installed the steam package from https://docs.slackware.com/howtos:multimedia:steam .
When I run it, it greets me with a GUI where I can enter my credentials.
Upon entering the credentials, the GUI disappears, the tray icon shows up as normal, but no other window opens. right clicking on the tray icon works, but i cannot open any of the windows either.
Can you help me figure out what went wrong on my system?
