No HDMI on laptop(s)

System: Slackware64-current + AlienBob's Plasma5, Intel on board graphics.

The problem: I cannot get any video or audio out of the HDMI port on either of my laptops. It was working fine until recently (3-4 weeks?)

I occasionally use Skype or Zoom to keep in contact with family and friends during these troubled times. I take a laptop into the spare room, where we have a large screen TV with a webcam on top. I connect the laptop to the TV via HDMI and boot. Usually, at the point where the penguins vanish, the TV comes to life and I get scrolling text as the system boots, followed by the graphical login screen. The laptops are set to duplicate the the built-in screen on the TV. The last time I did this was 3 or 4 weeks ago, and it all worked perfectly.

Today I tried again, but I couldn't get any sound or vision on the TV. It simply wasn't recognised as being present! It is not the HDMI lead (tried another) or the TV (works perfectly on a different HDMI source).

Both laptops use Intel graphics. One is an elderly I5 Dell, given to me because it had an intermittent screen problem, the other is a modern I5 machine with a very good spec. Same problem on both.

I don't *think* this is a Plasma5 issue, as the TV screen never lights up during the boot process. I've tried an older kernel and a new one to no avail.

It is as if the HDMI port is never getting recognised during the boot process.

XrandR only reports finding the internal screen.

It was working, now it isn't. What has changed?

Any ideas or suggestions for further fault finding?

Cheers,
