Skype for Slackware
by Scribtor from LinuxQuestions.org on (#569R5)
As the title suggests, I'm desperately looking for help on how to get skype working on my slackware OS.
Info:
Lenovo V310-15IKB Type 80T3
OS: Slackware current
Sound: Realtek internal card
Multilib version: 9.3.0 subversion 2
Kernel: 5.4.50 (default by installation was 4.19.69, upgraded to most current via slackpkg)
Since I am and will be working from home for the foreseeable future due to the <health/politics/conspiracies filtered out>, Skype is a must-work for me, and here is what I am encountering for the last few days.
I followed the default suggestions to install multilib and switch to purealsa in order for skype to work. Besides skype, I am in need to run wine, hence multilib.
What I am experiencing is the following:
Every reboot, either KDE as WM or Slackware, or both, "detects" that I removed my sound card and fails to load sound properly. My resolution is always the same, and that is to use the pre-existing script to revert back to pulseaudio-setup, reboot the machine, and after logging in, use the "README" to switch to PureALSA again. (I mirrored using lftp the whole directory of one of the http slackpkg sites, and run the scripts locally)
This "passes" the skype sound test, but whenever someone calls me, I can't answer. Can't means, I push the button to answer, but skype reacts as if I had missed to answer. When I call back, skype fails to recognize either sound output or sound input, and I have to repeat the re-switching to PA to ALSA all over again, and that only holds water for the first call I make or get. After that, again with the switching to PA to ALSA...
I do have extra time to dedicate to this problem by the end of the week, which does not exclude if necessary, a complete reinstall of the OS.
PureALSA isn't necessary, if there is a sufficiently good workaround to make skype work under PA.
I tried:
Apulse
1. Compiling from source --- build fails with generic makefile error
2. Bashing an SBo --- generic makefile error halway through the process
3. Using apulse from pkgs.org and calling "apulse skypeforlinux" from the terminal, skype fails to recognize the necessary devices, so mute&deafen again.
Running PA default:
Under no circumstance I tried with messing with the pa config files, is skype able to use the microphone properly
PureALSA
Success can be achieved, but it is temporary, with regards to a reboot, or number of different calls.
