Slackware to Ubuntu - will I be disappointed?

Historically I've always run Slackware (since about v12) for me desktop PC however stopped a few years back when I found I didn't really need a separate PC from my work laptop (which runs Window 10). Now I've just switched jobs and the laptop I get there has to be secured, so I can't install things on it etc - so I've gone and bought a new personal laptop.
A few years back I'd have just stuck Slackware on it and been done with it, however these days I'm less interested in having to spend days tinkering with things to set up, spending hours manually resolving package dependencies because there's no official slackbuild etc. I want things like my docking station, dual monitors etc to be easier to auto-detect and not have to write custom scripts to do that! The most important thing too, the wife will be using the laptop now and again. :)
Finally, aside from the obvious activity in the changelog, I'm slightly concerned about Slackware's direction with no major version release in four years (I know that's a separate argument).
So my other option is something like Ubuntu - or perhaps xubuntu as I'd quite like xfce due to it's lightweight. I'm figuring that this is the "easy option" because for those vendors who do support Linux, Ubuntu/Debian tends to be the distro they aim for primarily.
My concern is, coming from a Slackware background, am I going to find Ubuntu "too n00b"? ;) Not as rock solid stable as Slackware? Something else?
Someone change my mind before I jump in feet first! :D
