uefi slackware 14.2

Please bear with me - I'm an old hand but I guess mental capabilities are getting short.
So here's my problem:
1) I have one of these new-fangled micro 'desktops', cool li'l thing with 8 Gb of memory, wired and wifi - but alas uefi only. You can pick 'legacy' in the bios but it won't be honoured.
2) My usual setup is mx-linux and slackware - dual-booting
3) Installing mx-linux was a breeze, no problems at all
4) I could not 'install' slackware (couldn't boot from an iso-image), but used my 'usual' trick of copying a tar-ball of a working, current 14.2, then 'update-grub' using mx-linux - seems ok
5) So yes, I can boot into slackware, but ... using 'startx' it will not find a working screen. I have even copied /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d (from mx-linux) to my slackware partition - still no luck *sigh* - here's from my 'startx' command <code>
