Report: Bengals' Waynes to miss extended time with torn pectoral
The Cincinnati Bengals' secondary was dealt a significant blow on Monday, as cornerback Trae Waynes underwent surgery for a torn pectoral and will miss a "sizeable portion" of the 2020 campaign, sources told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero.
Waynes could still return before the season concludes, Rapoport adds.
The speedy defensive back signed a three-year, $42-million contract with Cincinnati in March. He was part of a defensive overhaul for Zac Taylor's squad and was expected to start opposite William Jackson III.
Waynes amassed 58 tackles, one interception, and two forced fumbles in 2019 for the Minnesota Vikings, and he missed two games with an ankle injury.
The 28-year-old's former Vikings teammate and recent Bengals free-agent addition Mackensie Alexander should take his starting spot. LeShaun Sims, Darius Phillips, Tony Brown, and Greg Mabin will also compete for an increase in snaps during training camp.
The Bengals' pass defense ranked 21st in 2019.
