use of "free" command in ubuntu gives a strange result.

Trying to learn command line in ubuntu I used the free command to check memory usage on my system.Unfortunately I can't insert an image at this time so I will explain what I see in terminal. Under "total" heading for mem: is 5.0G, used is 1.8G, free is 781M, shared is 111M, buff/cache is 2.5G, available is 2.9G.
Under "total" heading for swap is 7.6G, used 1.3M, free 7.6G
When I go into my systems settings and look at "Details" it shows that I have 5.0G of memory.I recently looked at the physical memory on my motherboard (I eventually want to put more ram in my system) and found that I have four slots with 2 sticks of ram installed, The first stick is 4GB and the second is 2GB for a total of 6GB. Yet my system details only shows 5.0GB.
Any ideas why this would be and how to fix it especially since swap shows more ram than I have in the system.
