Just upgraded to Buster and can no longer input Chinese characters

I was running Debian Jessie and was able to use English, Spanish and Chinese input methods with fcitx.

Then yesterday I upgraded to Stretch and then Buster, and I was able to configure the input method preferences to support English, Spanish and Hanyu Pinyin. The problem is, while both English and Spanish work, I can't input Chinese characters. I can select the Hanyu Pinyin method, but all that comes out are English characters.

I tried setting the active configuration to fcitx, and then to ibus, and I have he same problem with both.

Could anyone please help me sort this out?

Thanks in advance.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=lN3WyomU2LY:X2gwHcr1jJg:F7zBnMy latest?i=lN3WyomU2LY:X2gwHcr1jJg:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=lN3WyomU2LY:X2gwHcr1jJg:gIN9vFwlN3WyomU2LY
