New England Patriots quarterback Jarrett Stidham is dealing with a hip injury that will take "several weeks" to fully heal, sources told NFL Network's Mike Giardi.

Stidham was taken to a hospital on Thursday as a precaution and tests on his upper leg came back negative, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Stidham was able to participate in Friday's practice on a limited basis.

The second-year passer and Cam Newton are locked in one of the league's few true quarterback competitions in training camp, and the injury could open the door for the latter to begin the season as New England's starter.

Stidham has reportedly thrown multiple interceptions during team drills this week as the Patriots kicked off padded practices.

He was New England's fourth-round selection a year ago and entered the offseason as the favorite to succeed Tom Brady before the team signed Newton.

The 24-year-old faired well in preseason action in 2019 but played in just three games and threw only four passes in his first campaign.
