Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone believes the decision to waive Leonard Fournette was in his team's best interest.

"At the end of the day, I've got to be able to field a team that gives us the best chance to win," Marrone said, according to team writer John Oesher.

Jacksonville parted ways with Fournette less than two weeks before their 2020 season opener, and general manager David Caldwell exhausted all trade options before waiving the running back.

"We couldn't get anything," Marrone said, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. "A (fifth-round pick), a sixth, anything. We couldn't get anything."

The Jaguars reportedly believed Fournette was at the center of some recent locker room issues, and the 2017 fourth overall pick often vocalized his strained relationship with the franchise.

Despite the reported off-field concerns, Marone said the running back's release was related to his on-field performance as opposed to legal or internal team issues, according to News4's Justin Barney.

Fournette lasted just three years in Jacksonville. He amassed 1,152 yards on the ground and three touchdowns in 2019.
