Nagy clarifies he'll name Bears' starting QB before season opener

It turns out Chicago Bears fans won't have to wait so long to find out which of Mitchell Trubisky or Nick Foles will take the reins at quarterback to begin the season.

Bears head coach Matt Nagy appeared to say Saturday that he wouldn't publicly announce his starting quarterback prior to the season opener against the Detroit Lions. He clarified his comments Monday, however, insisting his decision will be made as early as next Monday, days before Chicago's first game Sept. 13.

"What I meant, to keep it real simple, was that there was not going to be a quarterback named this week that we're in right now," Nagy said, according to team writer Larry Mayer. "So I apologize if I made that gray. But there will be no waiting until the middle of the week or the end of the week for that to happen. That wouldn't be fair to our team and it wouldn't be fair to the quarterbacks."

"You will know by the time most teams usually know. We're not hiding anything," Nagy added. "We're going through, for us, this whole process and we don't even know that yet, to be quite honest. So we're talking through those situations and what's best and how to go about it."

Trubisky has been Chicago's primary signal-caller over the last three seasons, but his struggles resulted in the Bears declining the fifth-year option on his rookie contract and trading for veteran Foles this offseason.

Foles posted an 0-4 record after battling injuries in his first season with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019, while Trubisky won eight of his 15 starts and failed to lead the Bears to the playoffs.

Nagy declined to comment on whether one quarterback currently has an edge, but it was reported last week that Foles was ahead of Trubisky for the job. Both QBs have taken reps with Chicago's first unit.
