Definition of "bogon"

Seen a lot of crap about what a "bogon" is.
As of 1981 in my Cobol/Fortran programming classes, a "bogon" is that which, when your program doesn't work, and no error can be found in the documentation, and the reported error makes no sense - the cause is a "bogon" in the system. Possibly related to "gremlin."
Nothing to do with IP addresses, as those did not yet exist.
(This was the day of transcribing programs on to punch cards, and renting processor time over an actual telephone handset modem.)
