Ubantu / mint won't boot up

Good morning
Linux will no longer boot up ? It's been working fine for a year or more and was used daily.
On power-up, I press "ESC" for the boot menu and select the drive that Lunux is installed on. I run mint and ubanto.
The mint icon appears and the 5 little lights below it but after a short while the icon is lost ?
any thoughts or remedies most welcome.
