Still struggling to get decent sound in Linux Mint 20

First, PulseEffects just won't work well on this install. Spent hours getting it just right, but everytime I reboot, change source, or speakers > headphones it goes down the toilet.
With previous versions of Mint, I had no trouble with plain-old PulseAudio Equalizer. But Mint 20 does not have some of the listed necessary dependencies in the repo:
python-qt4
python-qt4-dbus
Are there different versions of these I should find/use?
The instructions I'm finding on multiple sites are all the same and they all fail.
There are over 3000 posts on the Linux Mint forum about this and confusion reigns.
Anybody here been successful with this?
