Upgrading CentOS6 to CentOS7

I've a laptop running CentOS 6 that I'd like to upgrade to Centos 7 or later, but an online search gives some conflicting info.
On the one hand, there are sites that give fairly straightforward instructions.

On the other hand, some older articles claim it can't be done - that the upgrade tool would simply mess up the system, not produce anything functional at the other end.
So what is the case? Has the broken upgrade tool been fixed?
