Too many Google requests: is there a virus?

I usually search with duckduckgo, only occasionally (less often than once daily) with Google. This evening Google rejected my first and only search with a 'too many requests' message. A few times earlier this evening my Internet traffic was slow. I was using lynx, which some sites treat as a scraper's tool.

I monitor the volume of my Internet traffic and haven't seen it spike.

Could I have a virus? I don't see anything I don't recognize in the process list.
