Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott faces a four-to-six month recovery window after undergoing ankle surgery, reports NFL Network's Jane Slater.

Prescott suffered a right ankle compound fracture and dislocation during Sunday's victory over the New York Giants. He was carted off the field and taken to a hospital, and he underwent surgery Sunday night.

Dallas will look to Andy Dalton to lead the offense without Prescott. The veteran quarterback finished 9-of-11 for 111 yards and rallied the Cowboys to a game-winning field goal against the Giants.

Prescott was off to a blazing start, throwing for 1,856 yards and nine touchdowns.

The 27-year-old is only under contract for this season as he's playing under the franchise tag.

In a statement Sunday night, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said, "We have no doubt that (Prescott) will return to the position of leadership and purpose that he brings to our team."
