Is there a command to see if there is any data on my hdd that won't open?

I have an encrypted hdd that will not open. I want to reformat it and partition it, but need to know if there is any data on it.

Looking online, I found the command line "df -h", but this only works if the hdd is mounted.

Is there another way, as I can't seem to find one.
