fstab - how to rebuild ?

1. Is is possible / feasible to REMOVE all mount data from fstab?
2. Would it be prudent to remove / comment out only mount data ADDED after OS is installed?
3. can I use mount-a to restore ALL necessary hardware mount points?
4. Do I have to add each mount point individually ? I am using "Disks" to add mount points to fstab. It gets little terse since I like both "name ' and "UUID" for easy navigation.
Any comments pro/con would be appreciated.
