U.S. Election Graphics: See where Trump and Biden are leading, search by state and view the breakdown in the House and Senate
The winner of the U.S. presidential race is determined by the 538 votes of the electoral college. It takes 270 votes to win. Each state plus Washington D.C. is accorded a certain number of electoral college votes roughly, but not exactly, based on population. The larger the state, the more electoral votes it has. In all but two states (Maine and Nebraska), the candidate with the most support in that state wins all its electoral votes.
There are 435 seats in the House of Representatives. It takes 218 to win control. Members serve two-year terms and represent districts of roughly equal size.
There are 100 seats in the Senate. Each state is accorded two, regardless of population size. Senators are elected to six-year terms and a third of them come up for re-election every two years. This year 35 Senate seats are being contested. Thirty Republican senators, 33 Democratic senators and two independent senators (who caucus with the Democrats) are not up for re-election.
