Cartridge "protection" problem with HPLJ102 printer.

I bought a HP LJM102 printer a year or two ago, and am just now starting to run out of toner. So I bought a couple of toner cartridges from Amazon, and when they arrived yesterday, I popped one in. The printer won't accept it, and consultation of the HP manual tells me I'm having a "cartridge protection" issue. (I'm reading this as "HP protection.") Connecting to the printer via Menu-Preferences-Printers shows me a printer icon with a ! on it, and of course it ignores printing commands. Re-inserting the old cartridge, after shaking of course, puts things back to normal - until I run out of toner some time soon.
But with a new cartridge, the manual gives me advice about connecting to the printer somehow via the web to disable this feature, via an HP "Embedded Web Server," but the instructions are for Windoze, and I don't seem to be able to translate them into anything useful in Linux.
Any help in disabling this so-called cartridge protection, which HP have so thoughtfully provided? (ps: I don't recall having enabled such when I started using this printer!..)
tnx in advance,
