Second X session unstable on Slackware current

For many years I have been running two X sessions as two separate users. I log into the first session via kdm and there is no issue there. For the second session I log in as the second user at the command line terminal and start the desktop with 'startx' or 'startx -- :1'. Recently this second desktop has become unstable, with either xfce or KDE. It often crashes and can have massive latency so that clicking on an icon, say for a web browser or terminal can take a minute to execute. Or sometimes it crashes out of the display. If xfce becomes unusable I can delete the config and be back up and running straight away. ksnapshot seems to be a moderately predictable way to crash xfce but it is more stable with KDE.

Kernel wise this problem first started with 5.7.x series. With 5.8.x the instability was replaced with the screen blanking and keyboard not responding to input. Though I could ssh in from another machine and reset things, restart kdm. I'm now on 5.9.3, I don't get the screen blanking but the second X session is far from reliable. However, it might not be the kernel, it might be somewhere in X.

I went to check the second desktop right now, but I am being being given a very slow login on a lightly loaded machine with / and /home on an NVME drive with 55% space remaining.
