New York Jets head coach Adam Gase has announced starting quarterback Sam Darnold is doubtful to play Monday night against the New England Patriots due to a shoulder injury, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Joe Flacco has been practicing more in the event he has to take over the starting role. The veteran signal-caller reportedly took all the first-team reps Thursday and Saturday, Brian Costello of the NY Post reports.

Darnold aggravated an AC joint injury in his throwing shoulder, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, which decreased his practice time throughout the week.

The former top-three pick was a limited participant in Friday's practice but will not practice Saturday.

Darnold has already missed two games this campaign due to shoulder issues. The 23-year old has thrown more interceptions (6) than touchdowns (3) in six games played.

New York's offense may get two key receivers back for Monday Night Football. The team expects both Jamison Crowder and Breshad Perriman to be active, according to Manish Mehta of the NY Daily News.

Crowder has missed the previous two contests with a groin injury but still leads the squad in receiving yards (383). Perriman, who was out last week with a concussion, is still searching for his first touchdown of the season.

The Jets - who currently own the NFL's lowest-ranked offense in points per game - are still searching for their first victory of the season.
