PID does not correspond to any program in ps aux

I have a strange situation.
Linux kernel is reporting a client application with PID ZZZZ (some numeric) but this PID does not correspond to any process on the system. I've also checked with:
Code:$ ps auxThe PID is not listed.
Has anyone seen this before?
