Nagy hands Bears' play-calling duties to OC Lazor

Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy is giving up play-calling duties.

Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor will replace him on Monday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings, the head coach announced Friday, according to Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic.

"It allows me to really look at all three phases from the head coaching position and focus on that," said Nagy, who's been calling Chicago's offensive plays since he was hired in 2018. "I'm excited to let Bill take this over and he has experience in this role. I think he's gonna do a great job.

"We need to do what's best for us, not what's best for Matt Nagy," he added, according to Patrick Finley of Chicago Sun-Times.

Lazor joined the team this offseason to replace Mark Helfrich, who was fired after the 2019 campaign. The offensive coordinator spent the 2019 season as an analyst at Penn State.

Nagy didn't confirm whether Lazor will take over the role permanently moving forward.

"I hate to say anything is permanent, but (we'll) just try to really focus on this week with the Vikings and keep it at that," he said, per Dan Wiederer of Chicago Tribune.

The Bears' offense thrived in Nagy's first season with the team but the unit hasn't been able to replicate that success since. Chicago, which is currently on a three-game losing streak, ranks 29th in both points scored and yards gained per game.
