synaptic software manager says have no internet

Running ubuntu 4.8.4-2 ubuntu1~14.04.4 [4.2.0-19-generic (x86_64)] Desktop environment XFCE4 Trying to use synaptic for installing needed apps am told can't because have no internet access, but do, have even downloaded items while synaptic being minimized, but still told have no internet available.
No idea what causes this and hope won't have to delete this synaptic and download a different one [which still may not solve problem]. Any suggestions?
