The New York Giants announced they fired offensive line coach Marc Colombo on Wednesday, but it apparently wasn't merely due to the blocking unit's struggles.

Colombo was relieved of his duties after a nasty verbal confrontation with head coach Joe Judge, sources told ESPN's Jordan Raanan.

The argument reportedly stemmed from New York's decision to hire longtime assistant and offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo as a consultant last week. Colombo disagreed with the move and felt he was being undermined, according to Raanan.

"We appreciate what Marc has done, but I felt like this move is in the best interest of the team," Judge said in the team's statement.

DeGuglielmo, who worked with Judge on the New England Patriots' coaching staff from 2014-15, will now replace Colombo. The Giants interviewed him for the then-vacant offensive line job in the offseason.

New York has allowed 31 sacks in 10 games this season, which ranks 30th in the NFL.

The 3-7 Giants are currently second in the NFC East behind the 3-5-1 Philadelphia Eagles.
