no terminal no xterm

i am new to kali as i used to use linux lite
i set up the configuration and all and when the gui starts up i only see the help and settings options no browsers and no tools
so i tried opening a terminal to get the tools
but the ctrl+alt+t did not work
i searched for terminal and i did not find it
so i did my research and it said hit alt+f2 and then type xterm
but when i type xterm
it says command not found
i did my reaserch and found nothing so please help!
i am runing kali on virtual machine if that helps to figure out the problem.
