[SOLVED] Quey re removing old kernels
by DownSouth from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5AJWT)
Hello
I was thinking of removing the oldest Linux kernels. When GRUB appears it indicates there are six in the system, matching what Synaptic shows as being Installed.
However, when I type "dpkg --list | grep linux-image" in the terminal there is a list of twelve. The ones that match the list displayed in GRUB have "ii" at the beginning of the relevant line shown in the terminal, and those that are 'missing' begin with "rc".
My original intention was to remove all except the three most recent ones, but this was before I discovered the listing in the terminal. I recall reading somewhere that typing "apt-get autoremove" in the terminal would offer to remove all but the most recent kernels... except it didn't on my system. It offered to remove four packages, but there was no mention of any Linux images - maybe what I read (or, more likely, what I recall) was not relevant / accurate?
Before I set about removing them individually, I wondered if any of you good people could tell me if these 'missing' ones are actually installed in the system, and if so - why they don't show up in GRUB or Synaptic?
thanks

Aaargh - think this would be more appropriate in the "Linux - Kernel" sub-forum. Apologies.
Perhaps one of the Mods could move it there?
