GRUB install errors at install time, can't troubleshoot

I left Ubuntu for a while and went to Manjaro, decided to go back and now neither Ubuntu Proper or Kubuntu can finish their installation, at the end when GRUB tries to install it ends in a "Fatal" error. Can't figure it out. Tried multiple times with each and same result. On a hunch, I reinstalled Manjaro and it installs it's GRUB fine and works. I've tried wiping the MBR and reinstalling to see if that helped which it didn't.
What's Manjaro doing the the *buntu's aren't? I don't want to wipe the partition table and start over because I'm trying to leave /home intact and also have a Windows partition I use for some work stuff. Any ideas? I've also tried to reinstall GRUB from recovery as well with no luck. Anything I can look for?
