BEWARE- Linux ZFS not compatible with Solaris ZFS
by kebabbert from LinuxQuestions.org on (#5B35Z)
Ok, it seems that Ubuntu 2020.10 ZFS version 0.8.4 is not compatible with Oracle Solaris 11.3.
Solaris 11.3 is the canonical reference implementation of ZFS. If Linux ZFS cannot import Solaris disks and vice versa, then Linux ZFS is not following the true ZFS version, but Linux OpenZFS is something else. I don't know what.
I suggest OpenZFS should be renamed to exclude the ZFS name, because it is not ZFS anymore? It is like if ntfs-3g cannot import ntfs disks - then it is not ntfs anymore. It should exclude ntfs from the name, to reduce the confusion.
Today everyone thinks that OpenZFS is just a open source version of ZFS - but it is not. It is something else and Oracle ZFS and OpenZFS are not compatible with each other. That is dangerous because OpenZFS might break your ZFS data.
