Birthday food bank nets 2,000 kilos of non-perishables
The residents of Garth Trails Adult Lifestyle Community delivered over 2,000 kilograms of non-perishable food to the Good Shepherd food bank Friday.
That delivery - seven SUVs full of food - was the result of a birthday request by three residents.
December babies and best friends Judy Prior, Kathy White and Cynthia Coulos didn't want or need anything for their birthdays, Prior said, yet there are so many folks, especially this year, who are struggling to make ends meet."
They decided to give back to the community with a food drive instead.
Prior estimates that at least 95 per cent of Garth Trails residents filled brown paper bags.
She and six friends with SUVs went door to door collecting the donation Friday morning and then made the delivery to Good Shepherd Centre on Cannon Street in the afternoon.
Next year, Prior says they are going to challenge the three other communities in their area to do the same.
