Latest current 64 bit updated startx no longer starts X as before

I have been using blackbox with a slightly modified .xinitrc to automatically start bbkeys and gkrellm. The current updates did not make any changes to the .xinitrc file, but it no longer works correctly. Running gkrellm & and bbkeys & in a terminal window works OK.
Any idea what has been changed?
