.xinitrc/.xsession not starting

I remapped some keys using the instructions on

I made a .xinitrc files according to the guide, bit it is not being executed when I log in. Same with .xession.
Is there an easy fix which does not require root priveleges?
This is in Linux Mint 19.1, MATE edition
