Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Jason Peters will miss the rest of the season due to a toe injury that will require surgery, head coach Doug Pederson announced Friday, according to Stacey Dales of NFL Network.

The 38-year-old - who missed most of October while on injured reserve - has played through the ailment in recent weeks but has failed to play up to the high standard he set throughout his likely Hall of Fame career.

Philadelphia's playoff chances are slim with four games to go, so it appears the team opted to shut down the veteran.

The longtime left tackle was re-signed by Philadelphia to play right guard, but a season-ending injury to Andre Dillard early in the year forced the Eagles to shift the nine-time Pro Bowler back into his original spot.

However, Philadelphia moved the struggling Peters back to right guard and replaced him with Jordan Mailata several weeks ago.

Nate Herbig is set to replace him for the rest of the campaign.
