Where is the actual executable when I download Discord?

I'm trying out Linux (Ubuntu 20.04, with Gnome I think) as a laptop OS. I downloaded Discord for Linux as a .tar.gz, and let Archive Manager unpack it for me. The result is a folder containing a bunch of stuff, including .so (libraries?), .pak (?), and some images. There's also a discord.desktop file, which appears to be a text file containing some metadata, and a big (127MB) file called just Discord.
But when I double-click Discord, I get an error saying "Could not display Discord - there is no application installed for "shared library" files."
So... where is the actual executable? What does one double-click to run a downloaded application like this?
UPDATE: I tried opening a Terminal window and launching that Discord file on the command line, and that worked. Is this normally required?
