Hamilton police officers recovering at home after James Street North stabbing

Three Hamilton police officers stabbed during a call with a person in crisis on James Street North Tuesday are recovering at home, police said.

The officers suffered minor injuries, including to their neck and head, during the incident around 3 p.m. Dec. 22.

A 24-year-old Oakville man is facing three charges of aggravated assault against a peace officer, possession of weapon dangerous, four counts of resist arrest and mischief under $5,000.

Police were initially called to James and Robert streets for reports of a person in crisis with a weapon.

In an statement Wednesday Hamilton police said officers used de-escalation techniques and minimal force to secure the male."

During the incident, the three officers were injured with a knife.

While police services routinely respond for calls of this nature, yesterday's incident reminds us of the importance of community safety and the fact that no call for service is routine," Hamilton police said in the statement, thanking the public for support.

Although an incident of this nature causes us all to pause and reflect, we are confident our officers will continue to demonstrate professionalism and commitment to the safety of all Hamilton citizens."

In a message posted on Twitter Hamilton Police Association president Clint Twolan said the officers are doing as well as can be expected."

These tough cops will endure, along with all their brothers and sisters," he said.

The incident remains under investigation. Police are asking for anyone with video or information to contact police.
