The Niagara Regional Police have called in the province's Special Investigations Unit after an officer-involved shooting near west St. Catharines early on Christmas morning.

The man was transported to hospital by Niagara EMS paramedics with non-life-threatening injuries. He remains in stable condition, said Stephanie Sabourin, the Niagara Regional Police corporate communication manager.

Hamilton police contacted Niagara Regional Police about a male involved in an assault who was believed to be in the Grimsby area at about 1:30 a.m.

More than an hour later, at 2:50 a.m., officers found the suspect's vehicle near St. Paul Street West and Vansickle Road.

There was an interaction with a male, and he was shot by officers," Sabourin said.

The NRP closed roads in the area of St. Paul Street West and Vansickle Road for the investigation.

The SIU is an arm's length agency investigating reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault.

As is the case in all SIU investigations, the NRP is prohibited from releasing further details.

However, they are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or has information to contact either the SIU at 1 (800) 787-8529 or the Niagara Regional Police Service at (905) 688-4111, dial option 3 ext. 1009242.
