3TB hard drive unusable

I have configured the drive for "gpt" and it fails to add partition at > approximately 2.5 TB points and up.
Funny - it complains about some "DOS" (!) value being to
large.
(What's "DOS" ?? Just kidding...)
Any way to fix that without destroying the whole disk contents ?
