XDM and choosing a WM / DE

I'm messing with a lighter session manager; and seems XDM is obviously the lightest. I like it as it is simple and I do not care for really customizing a theme; but after digging through the man pages, I haven't really found anything about XDM and choosing a session. Does XDM not even support that? How does one use something like XDM if you have more than one DE / WM?
