Environment Canada has upgraded a freezing rain advisory to a warning for the city of Hamilton on New Year's Day.

Precipitation is forecast to begin as snow mixed with ice pellets this afternoon before transitioning into freezing rain by the early evening.

Environment Canada is advising that a prolonged period of freezing rain will bring measurable ice accumulation to many areas. Ice buildup can cause slippery driving conditions, tree branches to break and power outages to occur.

The freezing rain is expected to transition to snow overnight, ending Saturday morning.

The incoming weather is associated with a low-pressure system moving north from Texas.

Temperatures are expected to drop to -7 C with a wind chill overnight.

A high of 3 C is expected over the weekend, with periods of snow on Sunday.
