Hamilton woman dies in single-car crash on Red Hill Valley Parkway
A 25-year-old Hamilton woman died Saturday in a single-car crash on the Red Hill Valley Parkway.
The city's first fatal vehicle crash of the year closed the Red Hill Valley Parkway in both directions for several hours Saturday night while the police collision reconstruction team investigated.
Police said the woman was driving a Toyota sedan north on the parkway around 3:30 p.m. when the car entered a grassy central median. The car travelled around 100 metres in the median before hitting a train bridge abutment between the King Street and Greenhill Avenue ramps.
The crumpled car was visible for the Red Hill Valley trail Saturday afternoon.
The driver, who was the only occupant of the car, died soon after arriving at hospital. The victim has not been identified by police.
More than an hour later, a passing vehicle rear-ended a police cruiser parked at the collision scene along the parkway. Police said both the officer in the cruiser and the driver of the passing car were uninjured.
But a police Twitter account urged motorists to slow down" and respect road closures" after the incident. The parkway reopened shortly after 8 p.m.
Investigators Sunday could not yet say what caused the crash, but are asking any witnesses to contact police at 905-546-4753 or submit tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
