How to setup VNC server on Debian 10?

I want to be able to VNC via ssh tunnel to a normal Linux desktop. I've done this before but can't seem to get it working in Debian. I installed tightvnc server and ran "vncserver" as a regular user and it runs, but when I try to VNC to it I just get a message that Cinnamon has crashed and there's nothing I can do to get past it.

I installed gnome desktop and I tried a bunch of xstartup file examples I found online so I can try to use Gnome desktop install but I just get a gray screen.

Is there a way to get this to work? I don't really care what desktop it runs I just want a usable desktop so I can use a normal desktop environment on the server.
Basically I'm writing some selenium scripts and I just want a GUI environment for testing them in non headless mode on the server side. I was trying X11 but it's just too slow. I've had good luck with VNC before but for some reason now it's not working.latest?d=yIl2AUoC8zA latest?i=WQ-13KDwEJ8:zrGCFiUp3Vs:F7zBnMy latest?i=WQ-13KDwEJ8:zrGCFiUp3Vs:V_sGLiP latest?d=qj6IDK7rITs latest?i=WQ-13KDwEJ8:zrGCFiUp3Vs:gIN9vFwWQ-13KDwEJ8
