Rooting a kindle using linux

I am thinking of rooting a kindle paperwhite, but I have a couple of questions. I've found a couple of methods online https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=335590, but I have a few questions:
Firstly, what methods worked for you, and what problems did you face.
Secondly, how do I back up the kindle so if I get a problem, I can restore it back to its original state?
