New to VPN, help with GeoBlocks

Hi Everyone
I like to study foreign languages and to teach my kids them. I want access to TV shows in Ireland and S. Africa.
I just want to watch kids shows with my kids or "regular" TV by myself, I am not going to watch p0rn so I don't care about my privacy more than I would if I was watching "Barney and Friends" :)
Are VPNs the only way to go? Is there any other way around a GeoBlock. I am about to subscribe to NordVPN but I would rather not if there is another alternative.
