Glen Peace, former Hamilton city manager and fire chief, dies

Glen Peace, a devoted public servant who acted as Hamilton's former city manager and fire chief, has died, the city said in a statement.

It is with sadness we learned of the passing of former City Manager and Hamilton Fire Chief, Glen Peace," Mayor Fred Eisenberger said in a statement on Sunday.

Peace served as chief administrative officer and city manager for the City of Hamilton, as well as general manager of emergency services and acting general manager of community services, during his career. From 1971 to 1996, he was a firefighter and served as fire chief in both Burlington and Hamilton.

He was also the Association of Municipalities of Ontario representative for the Provincial Land Ambulance Review.

An active member of his community, Peace sat on the campaign board of directors for the United Way Burlington and Greater Hamilton as well as the board of director for St. Joseph's Healthcare.

I had the pleasure of working with Glen when he was fire chief and during my time as mayor when he was our city manager. Without fail he was a dedicated civil servant concerned with the well-being of those he led and the community at large," said Eisenberger.

By all accounts he was an excellent Justice of the Peace and will be deeply missed. My sincere condolences to Glen's family and loved ones on his passing."

The flags at Hamilton fire stations will be lowered to half-mast for three days in Peace's honour, beginning Jan. 11, the city said.
