Bears GM eyes QB upgrade: 'That's what this whole offseason is about'

The Chicago Bears acknowledged Wednesday their quarterback room could undergo an overhaul during the upcoming offseason.

"We definitely need more out of that position, we know that," general manager Ryan Pace told reporters. "What does that entail? That's what this whole offseason is about."

The Bears had Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles split starts in 2020, with neither making much of an impression. While Chicago made the playoffs for the second time in three years, its offense ranked 26th in yards and 22nd in points.

Inconsistent quarterback play contributed to a six-game losing streak in the middle of the season. The Bears were eventually trounced by the New Orleans Saints in the wild-card round.

"It's pretty clear we need better production from the quarterback position in order to be successful," said chairman George McKaskey, who confirmed that Pace and head coach Matt Nagy will return in 2021.

The Bears have Foles, who they acquired from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a fourth-round pick last offseason, under contract for two more years. Trubisky is set to become a free agent after four underwhelming seasons. Pace famously traded up to No. 2 in the 2017 draft to select Trubisky ahead of Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson.

"Everything's on the table right now," Pace said of Trubisky's future in the Windy City. "The first step is, everyone take a deep breath. We got evaluations coming in from our own coaches and scouts on all our players."

The Bears, who have spent decades searching for a legitimate franchise quarterback, went 8-8 in 2020 for the second consecutive season.
